#EndSARS movement condemns looting, says protest continues
By Ekene Agbor, Osogbo
The movement for an end to police brutality and bad governnace in Nigeria (#EndSARS), Osun State Chapter has condemned looting and burgling of property in the state.
While calling for calmness, the movement reiterated it’s commitment to continue its peaceful agitation in the state.
This is contained in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the movement,
Olawale Adebayo Bakare (Mandate), Adebisi O. Emmanuel, Chairperson, Committee for Strategic Planning and Crowd Control, Olushayo Ogunleye, Mobilisation Secretary and Queen Fisayo, Chairperson, Finance and Welfare Committee,a copy of which was made available to News Boom on Sunday.
The movement said “the public display of dangerous weapons by tlthugs made the atmosphere become too tensed beyond what we could bear, and this sent many legitimate protesters away from the barricade, we decided to boycott the protest, and told all protesters to leave the protest ground to safety.
“In unequivocal term, we condemn intimidating our barricade with thugs in disguise for negotiations by the government officials and warn the government to desist totally to prevent provocations and chaos because it is obvious the oppressed masses are with us.
“It is safe for us to say the unhealthy patronage of thugs had motivated hungry citizens in search of Covid-19 palliatives, and to loot perceived properties of members of the State’s ruling class, their agents and the oppressors. An hungry man is an angry.
“However, we hereby condemn in strong term the destruction and looting of properties across the State and we appeal to the youths and people of Osun State to remain calm and law abiding as we continue to peacefully and constructively demand accountability from the State government and the country at large.
“We implore the State Security agents to investigate and arrest whoever is culpable in looting Innocent members of the public, we offer to provide for the State a legal representative to try these set of people. We wish to state that the inability of the State security to prevent or arrest the chaos is further prove that they are ineffective and need positive restructuring, retraining and reforms.
“The protests have not been called off but we have withdrawn to drawing board to re-strategize since Friday morning of 23rd October, and we will resume to the physical barricades once we fine-tune our plans.
“The need to withdraw and re-strategize is partly because we were heavily infiltrated and attempted hijacking by unwanted forces of the State sent to cause chaos and destabilise our peaceful and well-intended demonstrations.
“We intend to maintain the peaceful nature of our protest and continue with the demonstrations until our voices are truly heard, by a government demonstrated swift actions of Justice and redress, not only in terms of #EndSARS and police reforms but as requested by Nigeria masses, a comprehensive positive reforms of governance, security, social, economic and political structure for a better Nigeria that works for all.
“Kindly disregard any news that says we have called off protests, Nigeria is sitting on a gun powder and we the oppressed masses are at the receiving end. Protest being called off would amount to the betrayal of our collective interests as a people, we should all be engaging in demonstrations till we achieve a Nigeria that works for all.
“We thank you all good people for your supports thus far and therefore enjoin all people of the State to come out massively when the protests resume soon.”
The state government had denied allegation that it mobilised thugs to infiltrate or attack the peaceful protesters.
