Notwithstanding warning by the Osun State Police Command against any form of protest and procession, Civil societies Coalition and some youths in the State have declared their readiness to hold protest as part of activities marking the June 12 Democracy Day celebration.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Olawale Olokode on Friday advised parents and guardians to warn their wards against “unnecessary protest and procession” that could cause break done of law and order adding that the command wouldn’t tolerate any act of lawlessness.
Olokode, in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Yemisi Opalola and made available to NEWS BOOM in Osogbo, said adequate security had been out in place across the State to enable citizens to celebrate June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
“The CP, while assuring the people of the State of adequate visibility policing and constant vehicular patrols, also appealed to members of the public to cooperate and collaborate with the security personnel detailed for this special assignment and other vehicles on patrol duties put in place to curb any act of crime and criminality.

“He enjoined members of the public to conduct and comport themselves within the ambit of the law and jettison all forms of rumours of insecurity being peddled, as the police in synergy with other security agents are ready and capable to deal decisively with any act of criminality that might arise.
“The CP also, advised parents and guardians to warn their wards against any unnecessary protest and procession in the State that could cause break down of law and order, as the Command will not tolerate any act of lawlessness.
“More so, citizens are enjoined to be vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movement or infraction of the law to the Police for immediate action through these numbers: 08039537995 & 08123823981. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olawale Olokode, psc wishes all Nigerians a joyous and peaceful Democracy Day celebration,” the statement read.
However, Osun Civil Societies Coalition in Osun State has disclosed that it would commence celebration of June 12 with a rally.
A statement signed by the coalition’s Chairman, Comrade Waheed Lawal said the theme of this year’s celebration is: “The Making Of A Nation And Nigeria Democracy In Progress (Issues And Perspectives).”
It read: “The celebration will start with a rally. Human rights activities and pro-June 12 members of the public will converge at Oke-Fia, Osogbo by 8am for a rally. A public lecture will also hold at Aurora Event Centre, Ring-road, Osogbo for a public lecture.

“The Chairman of the occasion is Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
“Osun Civil Societies Coalition will also use this year’s June 12 celebration to renew the call for true Federalism and provision of adequate security for lives and property of the entire citizens of the country.
“We believe that only true federalism which is coming in the name of Restructuring can address the challenges facing Nigeria as a country. The current government structure is responsible for the myriad of problems which is choking the country’s development.
“Also, it is a known fact that Nigeria’s security structure has collapsed, which has thrown up a call for total overhauling of our security system. Nowhere in Nigeria is safe now and we call on the President to show seriousness and political will to address the insecurity problem with action.
“We also use this opportunity to call for peace and unity among Nigerians. This is a tough period for us all, but disintegration is not the solution. Our strength lies in unity of purpose.”
In thesame vein, a group of youths in Osun has said it would mark the 28th anniversary of June 12, 1993 by staging a protest in Osogbo.
The group said the peaceful protest would commence at Freedom Park on Saturday morning.
