Police in Osun State on Friday dragged two tenants before an Ile-Ife Magistrate’s Court in Osun State for allegedly beating their neighbour, Aro Olatunbosun to coma.
The two defendants: Christopher Chukwudi, aged 61 and Olumuyiwa Fayemi, 38, were accused of raining punches on Olatunbosun till he became unconscious.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on June 21, 2021 around 03pm at London Street, Ile-Ife.
Osanyintuyi said that the defendant conspired among themselves and stole the victim’s N3,000 after he passed out.
He added that the duo assaulted Olatunbosun by beating him with stick and fist blow.
According to him, the defendants conducted themselves in a manner that may cause the breach of public peace in the neighbourhood.
Osanyintuyi said that the offence contravened sections 70, 351, 383, 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to four-count charge of conspiracy, assault, breach of public peace and stealing slammed against them.
The defence counsel, Mr Ben Adirieje, applied for the bail of the defendants in most liberal term and assured the court that the accused persons would not abuse bail if granted.
Magistrate O. B. Adediwura granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 each in like sum.
Adediwura added that the sureties must swear to affidavit of means, reside within the court jurisdiction, provide reliable sureties and that their addresses must be verified by the prosecutor.
The case was adjourned till July 14 for mention.
