The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Osun State council, has condemned the attack on one of  its members, Mr  Toyin Yusuf, of the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, OSBC, while covering the ongoing protest by youths in the state.
Mr Yusuf, who is part of governor’s press crew was attacked by the youths who were protesting against police brutality.
This condemnation was contained in a statement signed by the chairman of the Union, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu and Secretary, Comrade Bukola Elufadejin.
According to the NUJ, “the attack was senseless and least expected from the youths who are believed to be educated enough to understand the place of media in propagating their activities.
The statement noted that it was unfortunate that the protesters who are clamouring  for justice and end to brutality and harassment have turned themselves to agents of attack on journalist who is performing his professional duty.

“It is expedient at this point for the genuine protesters to handover the hoodlums and thugs among them to security agents,  especially those who carried out the attack on journalist as the Union will have no option other than to direct his members to stop the coverage of the ongoing protest by the youth.

“It is unfortunate, barbaric and uncivilized for the youths that supposed to understand the place of media in the protest to be hostile to a journalist to that level of brigandage”, the statement said.
It further called on protesters to be civil in their agitations and shun violence since they are convinced of  fighting a genuine course.
