Journalist decries rising rate of rape in Nigeria, trains girls on self defence skills
A journalist in Osun State, Mr Timothy Agbor has expressed worry over the worsening rape culture in the Nigerian society and called on stakeholders to buckle up in nipping the ugly trend in the bud.
As part of ways of tackling the menace, Agbor trained over one hundred of secondary school girls at the first edition of Adolescent Boot Camp organised for teenage girls by an NGO, Value Female Network Nigeria in Ibadan Oyo State.
Agbor said he educated the girls, including persons living with disabilities, on self defence tips and marshall arts for them to escape rape and other sexual attacks.
He urged boys and men to desist from forcing girls to bed adding that the trauma and pain they go through is “heart-rending and life-snatching.”
Here is his full statement:
JOIN THE ADVOCACY & FIGHT AGAINST RAPE CULTURE IN OUR SOCIETY
I had the privilege of taking these adolescent girls through some tips on how to defend themselves against rape and other sexual assaults at the first edition of Adolescent Boot Camp organised by the Value Female Network Nigeria in Ibadan, Oyo State recently.
The rate of rape culture in our society today is devastating, to say the least. I am always pained each time I hear the gory tales of rape survivors.
Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it is very provoking that it now happens every few minutes in our society.
As a vanguard of advocacy and fight against this wicked and horrible menace, I know that training girls on how to defend themselves is one out of many ways of tackling it.
I have the opinion that the most potent way of ending rape or reducing it drastically is by BEGGING & TEACHING men, guys or boys (whichever category you fall) to STOP destroying the lives of girls and women by sexually abusing them.
Yes, I know some would remind me that boys and men fall victims of rape, too. You may be right if you hold this opinion, but remember that the statistics of girls and women who face this evil trend can’t be compared to that of men.
Therefore, I come to men and boys, pleading that they DESIST from forcing girls and women to bed because they are the source of this barbaric act.
Please, join me in this campaign against rape by telling others the need to stop it. The torture and trauma survivors go through are heart-rending and life-snatching. Many girls and women have died during rape and we can’t continue to live this way.
REMEMBER, YOU HAVE A MOTHER, WIFE, AUNT, SISTER, COUSIN SISTER, NIECE, & DAUGHTER. HOW WOULD YOU FEEL SHOULD THEY FALL VICTIM ?
