A new set of executive members have been elected by the Mbu-Akpoti Town Union (MATU) for the smooth administration of the community’s affairs.
The election, which was held late December, last year, was said to be fair, peaceful, credible and largely acceptable.
Chief Basil Ugwuagbo was elected the President General elect, among other executive officers of the town.
Giving updates of the election in a statement obtained by News Boom and tagged: “2023 MATU Election”, Hon Irenus Anene Nnaji, Leader of Isi-Uzo Legislative Council, disclosed that the poll was the first to be held in the ancient town.
It reads in full: “I want to thank God in heaven for making this election possible despite all odds and granting the umpires the grace to conduct a credible, free and fair election. May the name of the most high be praised for without Him we could do nothing.
“I thank the outgoing President General of Mbu-Akpoti Town Union, Barr Joseph Onah, and his crew for their selfless and outstanding service to our dear community, and for organizing/Superintending over the best town union election in Mbu. Equally, I appreciate the ingenuity and hard work of the Electoral Committee for such classic and excellent delivery. The out going executives had it on a platter of gold as they were appointed, making this the first election since the birth of our autonomous community. Yet, the Electoral Committee was able to manage the complexities of the process and delivered excellently. Well done.
“I also appreciate the presence, inputs wise counsels and participation of our foremost stakeholders in the election some of whom include Chief Sir A U Onah, Permanent Secretary Sylvester Ugwuagbo, Prof Festus Agbo, Igwe’s cabinet, council of elders etc. Your cooperation and support mean a lot to/for our community.
“Further more, I congratulate the President General elect, Chief Basil Ugwuagbo, and all those elected to serve our dear community with him. This is wishing them a purpose driven and fruitful tenure. The outgoing executives had a hard time discharging their duties owing to the aftermath of traditional rulership election in 2019. I believe, however, that the ground has been smoothened. May God help the new administration to achieve unprecedented developmental strides IJN.”
