We can no longer pay house rents, cater for family needs, ASUU cries out, begs for salary increment

TIMOTHY AGBOR, OSOGBO

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ebonyi State University chapter, Prof. Ikechukwu Igwenyi has called on the Federal Government to increase the salary scale of its members.

Igwenyi who lamented that the salary scale used in paying lecturers in Nigeria is that of 2009, described some of the polices of the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu as inhuman.

He made this known while speaking with newsmen in Abakaliki, disclosing that lecturers hardly pay their house rent and purchase food items such as bag of rice.

The ASUU boss faulted the Federal Government for high level of suffering and economic hardship on the citizens, especially on the lecturers who according to him, cannot pay house rent, fuel their cars, pay bills comfortably from their salaries.

According to him, “The polices, especially the hike in fuel prices, inflation that has hit a thousand per cent increase and unfortunately, everything in Nigeria has increased except the salaries of the lecturers.

“From ASUU perception, we are still paid with the salary structures we have since 2009. That is where we are, and so, you can imagine that lecturers can not even pay house rents. A lecturer cannot buy bag of rice and fuel his/her car comfortably.

“The policy is hard on us. We have come to support NLC on what they have done, to make a statement and tell Nigerians that we should come out and say no to all these policies that are inhuman, especially where a civil servant is paid a minimum wage of #30,000, and a bag of rice is #70,000. And there are other issues; the children school fees, house rent, health issues, social bills and so, how can we strive?”

“We can not go to work anymore. We want to support NLC, and say no to these things. We want government to hear this and reverse its resolutions to make sure that we have policies that are fair to the Nigerian people. That will help us to afford our basic needs and that is what we are all asking for,” he stated
