We’ve sustainable funding plan for proposed flyover projects – Osun government

TIMOTHY AGBOR, OSOGBO

Osun State Government has said its plan to construct flyovers in Osogbo, the state capital, was to facilitate economic growth and development in the state.

The government, while reacting to the admonition by a coalition of civil society organisations, The Osun Progressives, that construction of more flyovers in Osogbo would amount to waste of resources and space.

In a statement signed by the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, on Wednesday, said it has an infrastructure plan that has a sustainable funding model.

The Commissioner said Governor Adeleke was committed to addressing road crisis and other infrastructural deficits in the state, adding, “Federal roads are however particularly challenging because of the scale of the job and because the Federal Government of President Bola Tinubu is also just settling down.

“Governor Adeleke is however committed to addressing the road crisis, hence the revival of the state road maintenance agency which has become more active in the last few months.”

On the issue of flyovers in Osogbo, Alimi said, “We assure the public that the project design is such that it will not create an unbearable burden on the state even as the state needs to upgrade her infrastructure to achieve economic growth.

“At the Ipade Imole coming up on October 5th, Governor Adeleke will unveil full details of dualisation of roads and flyover bridges which other towns other than Osogbo will also benefit from, all under a financially and environmentally sustainable model.”

“On subsidy palliatives, we clarify that the state government is not shrouding the distribution process in secrecy as a public committee comprising various sectors of the society successfully handled the exercise,” he added.

News Boom  had reported that TOM, while addressing a press conference in Osogbo, asked Governor Ademola Adeleke to desist from his administration’s plan of constructing flyovers in Osogbo, saying such move would be tantamount to waste of resources and space.

Rather, the group advised the state government to dualise the affected roads in order to ease traffic congestions.

Addressing the September edition of the monthly State of the State Address in Osogbo, the Executive Director of TOM, Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli said the group’s concern was premised on the state of Osun’s finances, as well as the level of urgency of such infrastructure at the proposed locations.

The state government is planning to construct flyovers at Oke-Fia and Old Garage areas of Osogbo to tackle traffic challenges.
